Investment Criteria
Avrio invests in Canadian-based industrial life science companies that are developing products and services, and have the following attributes:
- An experienced growth oriented management team
- A sustainable competitive advantage either through proven science, proprietary intellectual property, or a strong brand franchise
- A large addressable market opportunity or a high-growth niche market segment
- A sound business model
- An entrepreneurial desire to build an enduring, world class organization
Industry Focus
Avrio looks for investments in three high-growth sectors:
- Industrial Bioproducts: Industrial and consumer goods manufactured wholly or in part from renewable biomass (plant based resources) applied to produce fuels and energy, lubricants, animal feed, polymers, solvents, emulsifiers as well as natural fiber composite materials.
- Nutraceutical Ingredients: Food or agricultural inputs that provide health and medical benefits, including the prevention and treatment of disease.
- Food technology: The application of food science to the selection, preservation, processing, packaging, distribution, and use of safe, nutritious and wholesome food.
Stage of Investment
Avrio focuses on commercialization and growth stage investments.
Typically, the use of proceeds is to commercialize products, initiate product roll-outs, expand distribution and market presence, or fund growth (organically or through acquisitions).
Size of Investment
Avrio will invest up to $10 million over the life of any single portfolio company.
The Avrio team is patient, recognizing that successful companies require support over at least five years to realize their potential value.
